Your gut is home to trillions of tiny living things that interact like a natural ecosystem. Scientists have found more types of microbes here than almost anywhere else in your entire body.
Most bacteria in your gut are not germs that make you sick. Many help your body digest food, make vitamins, and stay protected. Others simply live there without causing problems.

Diversity = Stability

Food Shapes Your Gut Garden
A gut with many different kinds of bacteria is usually more stable and better able to handle change — like illness, stress, or a new diet ,the same way a forest with diverse trees survives a storm better than a monoculture.
The foods you eat help different kinds of bacteria grow, changing your gut community over time. Research shows these changes can happen within just 24–48 hours.

🌲 Scenario A – The Monoculture Forest
Imagine a forest where every tree is a pine tree.
A beetle arrives that only eats pine trees.
❓ Ask students: What do you think will happen?
✅ Answer: All of the trees are at risk because every tree is the same species. The beetle can spread throughout the entire forest.

🌳 Scenario B – The Diverse Forest
Now imagine a forest with pine, oak, maple, and birch trees.

Ask: If your gut only had one or two kinds of bacteria and one disappeared after illness or antibiotics, what might happen?

Then ask: What if your gut had many different kinds of bacteria?

Learning Goal
Students recognize that diversity means having many different kinds of living things not simply having more of the same thing.
Before the Activity
- Pre-sort beads/pom-poms into small cups by color so materials are ready to grab.
- If using paper circles, print them on colored cardstock or have students color-code with markers.
- Optional: label each color with a fun bacteria name (e.g., Bifidobacterium = blue, Lactobacillus = green) to connect to real science vocabulary.
During the Activity
- Circulate and prompt students who pile on lots of beads of the same color: You have a lot of bacteria but is it diverse? How many different kinds do you have? This reinforces the distinction between quantity and diversity.
- Ask students to physically point to their two plates when answering Q2. Seeing both side by side makes the concept concrete.
- If students say Ecosystem A could be healthy, ask: What happens if the one type of bacteria it has gets wiped out by antibiotics or a stomach bug? What's left?
